Shopping for Your Immune System

When you go to the grocery store, think of your immune system. What does it want?

Fresh, fresh, fresh! No, not fresh pizza, fresh foods! Organic fruits and vegetables have top priority (but no corn). Never buy strawberries, zucchini, soy, or sugar unless they are organic. Be sure to read ingredients on pre-packaged foods. Chemicals in food reduce the health of your immune system. If you can’t pronounce the ingredient, you probably shouldn’t eat it. Buy organic meats if you can.

Comfort foods often include cookies, ice cream and other sugar-laden products. But sugar makes you weaker, inflames your body and hampers your immunity. Avoid sugary foods, including artificial sweeteners. Try to satisfy your sweet tooth with fruit or even sweet potatoes.

If you are buying canned goods, look for those without added sugar that are low in sodium. Same goes for dehydrated foods like beef jerky for example — buy ones without a bunch of preservatives and flavorings.

Eating right during this crazy time will help reduce your stress and help keep you healthy. Bon Appetit!
