A recent article in Medical News Today shared the results of a study of almost 200,000 participants. It was found that individuals who have back pain are more than twice as likely to experience a range of emotional health conditions including anxiety, depression, psychosis, stress, and sleep deprivation.
And yet another study published in the Journal of Public Health indicated that adolescents who experience back pain more frequently are also more likely to smoke cigarettes, drink alcohol, and report problems such as anxiety and depression.
Back pain is the leading cause of disability around the world. According to the Global Burden of Disease study, lower back pain affects almost one in 10 people. Back pain reduces the quality of life and increases the risk of other health problems. And emotional health is just one of them.
According to the American Chiropractic Association, up to 80% of the population will experience back pain at some time in their lives, and this condition is one of the most common reasons for people to be missing work. Low-back pain costs Americans at least $50 billion in health care costs each year. If you add in lost wages and decreased productivity, that figure easily rises to more than $100 billion.
It’s no surprise that back pain is the most common issue I hear about from my patients.
