Is My Thyroid Normal?

Is My Thyroid Normal?

Let’s talk about the thyroid and see if we can determine if your thyroid is normal.

The thyroid is a small gland located in the front of the neck below the Adam’s apple. It produces hormones that regulate how fast we burn food (metabolism). It also helps to regulate body temperature, body energy, use of other hormones and growth and development of body tissues.

What can go wrong with the thyroid? The gland can produce too much or too little hormone, an issue that is more common in women than in men.

Symptoms of thyroid overproduction include:

• Weight loss even if eating more
• Increased heart rate
• More frequent bowel movements
• Muscle weakness, trembling hands
• Goiter (enlarged gland)
• Change in menstrual cycles

Symptoms of an underactive thyroid include:

• Tiredness, mental slowness, depression
• Slow heart rate
• Increased sensitivity to cold
• Tingling or numbness in hands
• Goiter
• Constipation, heavy menstrual periods
• Dry skin
• Dry, thinning hair; loss of outer eyebrows
• Swelling around the eyes
• Decreased circulation to the skin resulting in dry, coarse skin on extremities
• Redness over front of necklines in front of neck prominent

Children can also experience thyroid problems. Symptoms include being tired, poor growth, delayed tooth development, decreased sexual development, poor school performance, behavioral problems, anxiety and being too active. Infants can be overly tired and constipated.

Lab tests which can tell us which type of thyroid problem you may have include CBC, CMP, TSH total and free T4, T3, Reverse T3, T3 uptake, TPO antibody and TGB antibody.

But often times thyroid tests come up normal even though you may have many symptoms of thyroid issues.

At Thorburn Chiropractic & Wellness Center, we utilize Nutrition Deficiency Testing (NDT) a non-invasive means of testing the body to determine the underlying causes of health issues and Science Based Nutrition lab work, including hair analysis. These natural means of testing can often identify issues that traditional testing ignores.

Once we identify the problem then I can recommend the best course of treatment to get you feeling wonderful again!
