What Are Allergies, Anyway?

Greetings from Dr. Thorburn:

What are allergies, anyway, and why are they aggravating me and so many of my loved ones this year?

According to the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America (AAFA), allergies are one of the most common chronic diseases.  An allergy occurs when the body’s immune system sees a substance as harmful and overreacts to it. Chronic allergy sufferers can certainly relate to that statement!

Pollen is one of the most common triggers of seasonal allergies. Many people know pollen allergy as “hay fever.” Doctors usually refer to pollen allergy as “seasonal allergic rhinitis.”

Grasses are the most common cause of allergy, and ragweed is a main cause of weed allergies. Other common sources of weed pollen include sagebrush, pigweed, lamb’s quarters and tumbleweed. Certain species of trees, including birch, cedar and oak, also produce highly allergenic pollen.

The frequent high winds we have been experiencing over the past few weeks have certainly compounded allergy problems this year, whipping up a frenzy of blowing pollen and dust.

Here are some allergy facts courtesy of the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America:

  • Researchers indicate that nasal allergies affect about 50 million people in the United States.
  • Allergies are increasing. They affect as many as 30 percent of adults and 40 percent of children.
  • In 2012, 11.1 million people were diagnosed with allergic rhinitis.

It is interesting to note that plants fertilized by insects, such as roses, and some flowering trees such as cherry and pear trees, usually do not cause allergic rhinitis.
