Dr. Thorburns Health Tip – Acid vs Alkaline – Chiropractor Burbank Ca

Greetings to you,

There is a lot of talk about body pH, meaning “the potential of hydrogen”.  The pH level is a measure of acidity or alkalinity, which takes numerical values from 0 (maximum acidity) through 7 (neutral) to 14 (maximum alkalinity).  Our ideal blood pH is slightly alkaline, with a normal range of 7.35 to 7.45.

Our bodies are designed to work best when they are slightly alkaline.  In an article titled “Acid-Alkaline Balance: Role in Chronic Disease and Detoxification”, the author states that over time, eating foods that create an acidic environment in the body leads to chronic low-level acidosis.  A chronic acidic load can cause a number of health conditions such as osteoporosis, kidney disease, muscle wasting, toxic overload and immune problems.

When the body becomes more acidic, it tries to bring the acidity down and it “borrows” alkaline reserves from other body areas such as the bones.  Using bone in this way leads to osteoporosis – a condition that is widespread in our country.  Calcium is taken from the bones to buffer the acid.

The strongest acidic substances we can consume are white bread, alcohol, colas and sodas, coffee, white sugar and artificial sweeteners. Other acidic foods include meat, fish, poultry, eggs, dairy, and grains.  Generally speaking, alkaline-forming foods include most fruits, green vegetables, peas, beans, lentils, spices, herbs, seasonings, seeds and nuts.

Very alkalinizing foods are asparagus, broccoli, kale, carrots, mineral water, pumpkin seeds, lentils, seaweed, onion, sea vegetables, sweet potato, lime, lemons, nectarine, persimmon, raspberry, watermelon, tangerine, and pineapple.

Yours in health,

Dr. T.
