Dr Thorburns Health Tip, Gatorade vs Bananas
Greetings to you from Dr. Thorburn,
We are fast approaching the warm summer months and we’ll be reaching for drinks to quench our thirst. I’ve found that many sports drinks such as Gatorade, Powerade, Red Bull, etc. contain a lot of unhealthful flavorings, colorings and sweeteners.
Interestingly, a study from the May 29th issue of ScienceDaily has found that bananas are as beneficial as sports drinks. Dr. David Nieman of the Appalachian State University in North Carolina said: “We wanted to see which was more beneficial when consumed during intense cycling – bananas or a carbohydrate sports drink. We found that not only was performance the same whether bananas or sports drinks were consumed, there were several advantages to consuming bananas.”
Bananas are a rich source of potassium, magnesium and other nutrients and are easy for cyclists, runners or even walkers to carry. Bananas provided the cyclists with a greater nutritional boost by adding fiber, potassium and vitamin B6. Dr. Nieman said: “The mode of exercise is not the issue. I think there are a lot of athletes who don’t like the thought of drinking carbohydrate sports drinks, which are essentially flavored sugar water.”
I often recommend my patients stay quenched with a product called Electromix, a powder added to water which contains those minerals most lost in hot weather (potassium, calcium, magnesium, manganese, and chromium).
Here’s to a healthier summer!
Yours in health,
