Chiropractic 101: How Does It Work?

October is National Chiropractic Health Month, the annual celebration of the benefits of chiropractic care and its natural, whole person, patient-centered and drug-free approach to health and wellness.  I thought I would start off the month by offering a simple review of how and why it works.

About 30 million Americans visit chiropractors each year. A great many of these people are seeking relief from back pain from various causes, including accidents, sports injuries, and muscle strains. Other complaints for which people seek chiropractic care include carpal tunnel syndrome, pregnancy aches, knee and leg pain, sciatica, and headaches. Chiropractic care can also help with many non-traditional problems such as blood pressure, reflux, anxiety and depression, asthma, and more. Here’s why.

It’s a scientific fact that your nervous system (brain, spinal cord and nerves) control every single thing about your body – from breathing, blood flow, digestion, energy level, to all organ functions. So, if the nervous system is healthy, you are healthy too. But, what happens if your nervous system becomes unhealthy? Yep – you become unhealthy.

Your nerves can be chafed, stretched, compressed, or irritated where they exit the spine due to a vertebra moving out of place. When this happens, the nerve shuts down and your organs can then work overtime or can become weakened and your health suffers.

Your body wants to be healthy but it cannot when your nerves aren’t working correctly. When the bones go out of place you may have pain, but most often you do not, so you cannot tell if you have vertebrae out of place by how you feel.

Chiropractic treatment restores proper motion of the spinal bones, which reduces nerve irritation.  It also works on the other joints to restore normal movement.

More and more people are choosing chiropractic care first — before medicine and surgery — as it is safe, natural, and works with your body to create optimum health.
