Belching, Bloating & Gas: Six Simple Tips for Avoiding Them

In some countries, belching after dinner is considered the polite way of thanking your host for a great meal. But here in the USA, belching and cousins bloating and gas are considered digestive issues that cause discomfort we can all live without. Plus, over 70% of your immune system is in your digestive tract, which makes healthy digestion a key element in your overall wellness.

Here are six simple steps you can take to insure better digestion.

Chew your food. Chewing your food well allows your saliva to start breaking down the food for smoother digestion. Eat slowly and deliberately.

Handle stress. When you’re stressed, the fight-or-flight reaction begins and digestion slows. Your body shuts down blood flow, which affects digestive muscles. Take time to relax, breathe deeply, and let go of the stresses in your life.

Get regular exercise. When you exercise, you support the muscles of your intestines, which maintain regularity. Exercise also helps to reduce stress, supporting healthy digestion.

Stay hydrated. Drinking pure, fresh water supports regularity and the health of the digestive system. Avoid sodas as they contain unhealthy sugars such as high fructose corn syrup or artificial sugar substitutes. And, the carbonation can cause gas. Limit caffeinated beverages and eliminate alcohol.

Eat more fiber. Eat a well-balanced diet, and avoid processed foods, sugars and highly refined carbohydrates. Fiber-rich foods are excellent for digestion. Eat plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables and limit grains and high-fat meats.
